Children and Anxiety

When children are anxious it often shows in a number of ways – color changes in skin (notice a child’s ears when they become red), crying, acting out etc… We try to first feedback what the children are feeling by giving them the words “You are feeling nervous” – usualy they will nod and then you can reassure then “It is ok to feel nervous. I want to give you some tools to help you.” Offering an object to squeeze and keep in their pocket is helpful. Giving them positive affirmations to remember – say to yourself “I can do it.” “I will have fun.” Taking a deep breath can help as well. The important thing is to empower the child to help himself work through any anxieties they may have.
